The Fundamentals

Q 01

What is a home golf simulator?

A home golf simulator is a complete indoor system that lets you hit real golf balls and see an accurate, data-driven representation of where they’d land on a real course. It combines a launch monitor, impact screen, projector, and simulation software to recreate the golf experience in your own space — garage, basement, bonus room, or dedicated studio.

Q 02

How does a golf simulator work?

When you strike the ball, a launch monitor uses high-speed cameras or radar to capture dozens of data points in milliseconds — ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, and direction. That data is sent to simulation software, which calculates the ball’s flight path and projects it onto the screen in front of you in real time. The result is a highly accurate visual of exactly how that shot would play out on a real course.

Q 03

Are home golf simulators worth it?

For serious golfers, absolutely. A home simulator eliminates driving time to the range, removes weather and daylight restrictions, and gives you precise data on every shot. When you factor in range fees, green fees, and travel over years, the investment pays back quickly — while also adding real entertainment value for guests and family.

Q 04

How accurate are golf simulators?

High-end systems built around Uneekor and Foresight launch monitors are remarkably accurate — within 1–2% of real-world ball data for carry distance, launch angle, and spin. Photometric (camera-based) systems outperform radar for most shot types in an indoor setting. The quality of the launch monitor is the single biggest factor in how accurate your simulator will be.

Space & Requirements

What you need

How Much Space Do You Need for a Golf Simulator?

Space is the first question most homeowners ask — and the good news is you probably have enough. The minimum recommended footprint is around 10 feet wide by 12 feet deep, with a ceiling height of at least 9 feet. More room always means more comfort, but Virtual Tee has built functional simulator rooms in garages, basements, spare bedrooms, and commercial suites of all shapes and sizes.

Beyond dimensions, you’ll need a solid electrical circuit for the projector and electronics, a network connection for software and course downloads, and enough clearance behind the hitting position to swing a club freely. Light control is also essential for camera-based launch monitors — we install black-out curtains on every build.

Minimum Requirements Checklist

Room Width

10 ft minimum — 12–15 ft ideal for comfortable swing clearance

Ceiling Height

9 ft minimum — 10 ft+ preferred, especially for taller golfers

Room Depth

12 ft minimum from screen to back wall for full swing clearance

Electrical

Dedicated 15–20A circuit recommended for projector and electronics

Light Control

Black-out curtains or no natural light required for accurate tracking

Network

Wired Ethernet or strong WiFi for course downloads and software

How much does a home golf simulator cost?

A complete home golf simulator installation typically ranges from $15,000 to $60,000+, depending on the launch monitor you choose, the scope of the room build, and the enclosure and screen system. Entry-level systems with basic builds start around $15,000–$25,000. Mid-range builds fall in the $25,000–$45,000 range. Premium builds with flagship Uneekor or Foresight units can reach $45,000–$75,000+ for a fully turnkey installation.

The single biggest cost variable is the launch monitor — it drives both the accuracy of the system and a significant portion of the overall price.

What is the best golf simulator for home use?

The best simulator depends on your budget and priorities. For the most accurate ball and club data, Uneekor EYE XO2 and Foresight GCQuad are the gold standard. For an excellent balance of performance and price, the Uneekor EYE XO and Foresight GC3 are hard to beat. If you already own a Trackman or another launch monitor, Virtual Tee can design a complete room around your existing equipment at a lower overall cost.

What’s the difference between a launch monitor and a golf simulator?

A launch monitor is the hardware device that captures your shot data — ball speed, spin, launch angle, and more. A golf simulator is the full system built around that launch monitor: the enclosure, impact screen, projector, hitting mat, flooring, and software that turns raw shot data into an immersive, playable experience. You can use a launch monitor outdoors without a simulator setup, but every simulator requires a launch monitor at its core.

What simulation software comes with a golf simulator?

Virtual Tee builds around TGC2019 (The Golf Club 2019) as our primary simulation platform — it offers a library of over 170,000 community-created courses, solid graphics, and deep integration with Uneekor and Foresight hardware. Other popular options include E6 Connect (licensed courses like Pebble Beach, exceptional visuals), GSPro (strong with Foresight monitors), and Creative Golf 3D. Many setups support multiple software packages so you can switch based on what you want to do.

Can you play real golf courses on a home simulator?

Yes — and this is one of the most popular features. TGC2019 alone includes over 170,000 playable courses plus officially licensed venues. E6 Connect offers licensed replicas of Pebble Beach, TPC Scottsdale, Torrey Pines South, and more. You can play a full 18-hole round, track scoring across rounds, and even play online with friends on many platforms. For practice, most software also includes driving ranges, approach simulators, and short game areas.

Can a golf simulator actually improve my game?

Significantly. A simulator gives you precise shot data every time you swing — something a typical driving range simply can’t match. You can see exactly how adjustments to your swing affect ball speed, spin rate, and carry distance, making feedback-driven practice far more effective. Most golfers who install a home simulator see measurable handicap improvement within the first season because they practice more consistently and with much better data guiding each session.

Do I need a completely dedicated room for a golf simulator?

Not necessarily. Many of our customers install simulators in multi-use spaces — a garage that still parks one car, a basement that doubles as a home theater, or a bonus room that also functions as a home office. The key is having enough unobstructed space when you’re using it. Virtual Tee will work with your existing layout to design a setup that fits your life, not the other way around.

How long does a golf simulator installation take?

A typical Virtual Tee installation — including framing, flooring, enclosure, and full launch monitor setup — takes 2 to 5 days depending on room complexity and build-out scope. More complex projects involving significant room framing or custom finishes may take slightly longer. Our team handles everything from start to finish, so you don’t need to coordinate multiple contractors or manage a construction timeline on your own.

Do golf simulators require special lighting?

Light control matters, particularly for camera-based systems like Uneekor and Foresight. Ambient natural light can interfere with ball-tracking accuracy. Virtual Tee installs black-out curtains as a standard part of every build. For room lighting, we recommend dimmable overhead fixtures that can be adjusted during play to maximize screen visibility — similar to a home theater setup. We walk you through all of this during the design phase.
